DSI Energy Sector: A Commitment to Green Power and CO₂ Reduction
Our company’s strategy is fundamentally centered around our dedication to the environment. The DSI Energy Sector achieves this dedication through a dual focus on low-impact hydro and solar technology:
1. Hydropower: Low-Impact & Carbon-Free Generation
The DSI Hydro Sector focuses on run-of-the-river hydroelectricity generation. This approach addresses the growing awareness of environmental problems caused by the building of large dams and the inundation of large areas of land, as it requires capturing only a portion of a river’s water flow. The environmental impact of installing such systems is negligible.
We are meticulous in following all environmental requirements, which include:
- Preserving River Flow: Ensuring river flow is maintained for the sake of the local community’s supply and the health of the surrounding aquatic and plant life.
- Minimizing Noise Pollution: Adhering to environmental authority stipulations that noise levels in powerhouses must not exceed 60 dB.
- No Fuel-Based Emissions: Since no fuel is needed in the production of hydroelectric electricity, there are no emissions from generators that run on gasoline, diesel, or propane.
2. Samson Solar Power: Harnessing the Clean Sun
Samson Solar Power reinforces the Sector’s green commitment by harnessing the ultimate non-polluting source: the sun. Our 7 solar power plants operate with zero emissions, utilizing cutting-edge photovoltaic technology to generate clean, sustainable electricity. This focus is central to our strategy of diversifying the Group’s energy portfolio and further minimizing our collective environmental footprint.
CO₂ Reduction: Our Combined Environmental Feat
All corporations now have a responsibility to reduce CO₂ emissions to address the grave issue of global warming. In balancing electricity generation and environmental preservation in Sri Lanka, the DSI Energy Sector has taken a leading role.
Since both our hydropower and solar facilities do not release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, the DSI Energy Sector makes a substantial contribution to the reduction of emissions. The entire output of our plants is supplied to the national utility (Ceylon Electricity Board), offsetting the need for the CEB to buy or generate an equal amount of energy from polluting thermal sources.
Our combined activities equate to a verified yearly reduction in CO₂ emissions of approximately 5,900 metric tons (MT).
Renewable Power Project Contribution to CO₂ Reduction (Annual)
| Renewable Power Project | Contribution to CO₂ Reduction (Annual) |
|---|---|
| Werapitiya Mini Hydro | 1,538 MT |
| Hydro Trust Lanka | 1,590 MT |
| Loggal Oya Mini Hydro | 695 MT |
| Samson Solar Power (7 Plants) | 2,077 MT (Approx. 4,000 kWp at 0.519 MT/kWp/Year) |
| Total Annual CO₂ Reduction | 5,900 MT |
The CO2 reduction for solar is calculated based on standard industry assumptions for the emission factor of Sri Lanka’s national grid (0.519 tCO2/MWH) as per the Clean Development Mechanism’s approved methodology for grid-connected projects in Sri Lanka), providing a conservative and verifiable environmental claim.
